The Art of High-End Home Design with Larissa Hopp

As design aficionados, it can be hard to balance budgets with aspirational high-end design principles, and at this point, it’s almost its own art form to be able to combine budget-friendly items with luxury staples. Ahead of the Edmonton Fall Home Show, we chatted with Larissa Hopp, designer for The Lounge, to chat about “The Art of High-End Home Design”, and how everyday homeowners can add pieces of “wow” to their spaces.

1. What are some key elements that differentiate "high-end" and "budget-friendly"? Are there ways homeowners can integrate high-end home staging on a budget?

“The main elements that differentiate high-end and budget friendly to me are the use of natural materials and finishes, mixing in one-of-a-kind decor pieces and curating items in a unique way,” says Hopp. “By avoiding manufactured, all mass and matching sets, you can really elevate a space to make it look thoughtful and intentional.”

If homeowners are looking to integrate a high-end staging look on a budget, Hopp suggests paying attention to the feel and material of the pieces. “There really are affordable options out there if you shop around and keep an eye out. Things like using cotton bedding vs polyester make a big difference.” When it comes to decor, Hopp recommends shopping at stores like Homesense that offer unique pieces in a limited quantity. “Buying limited items, or hard-to-find items, means you are closer to achieving that "one-of-a-kind" curated look at a budget-friendly cost,” says Hopp. “Another great way is to shop the "end of season" sales at higher-end stores to score those high-end pieces for a fraction of the cost.”

2. How do you approach staging a space to appear luxurious while balancing a sense of livability?

“It's all about having a good mix,” says Hopp. “I like to include higher quality items around the main focal points of each room for that initial wow factor.” Throughout the rest of the space, she suggests keeping it pretty neutral & calm. “This method,” she says, “is a way  to grab the attention of visitors as they are walking in, but also create a comforting environment that they can resonate with and feel at home in.”

3. What are two simple things homeowners can integrate now to elevate their spaces?

“I would definitely suggest switching to natural materials when it comes to bedding and other textiles,” says Hopp. “You can find good brands online or at places like Homesense for budget friendly options.” Another tip she suggests is to incorporate greenery into your space. “Using plants, stems, or greenery adds a sense of nature to each room and can help elevate it for a relatively reasonable cost.”

4. Can you share any “high-end” trends you're seeing in home trends so far this year?

“I’m definitely seeing that the "organic modern" look has become increasingly popular,” says Hopp. “I am here for it! It's full of soft curved lines, natural materials and neutral hues. I am a big fan!”

Incorporating high-end design elements into everyday spaces doesn't have to be a daunting or expensive task. As Larissa Hopp highlighted, by mixing affordable, thoughtfully sourced items with quality, higher-end pieces, homeowners can create a space that feels elevated and personalized without overspending.
